  • signed upper left: DEN AVDEN / NEEffS
    and lower right: djffranck

  • oil on panel, stamped on the reverse with the coat of arms of the city of Antwerp and the panel maker's mark of Michiel Vriendt (fl. 1615-1637):

Provenance

Private collection, England.

Condition

Panel is uncradled and bevelled on all four sides and is very slightly bowed from top to bottom. there is a single horizontal panel join that is only slightly visible on the reverse. overall there is very good retention of the paint surface with lovely detail throughout. under ultraviolet light, the varnish fluoresces unevenly making it difficult to read. there are some scattered small retouches to some of the figures, with some of these are in the form of reinforcements of their outlines. the painting generally looks quite good and most of the areas that fluoresce are just unevenness in the varnish and not retouching. In a Dutch style black wood frame.

Catalogue Note

The interior in this painting is almost certainly based on that of Antwerp cathedral. A similar work by Neefs and Francken (whose signature here is shortened from de jonge Frans Francken or 'the younger Frans Francken'), of the same view but with variations to the architectural detailing sold London, Sotheby's, 6 December 2007, lot 146 while another is in the Utton Easson collection, England.1
