Description
- The Doge crowned on the Scala dei Giganti of the Ducal Palace, Venice; Annual Visit of the Doge to Santa Maria della Salute, Venice
- a pair; both oil on canvas, unframed
Literature
The present pair is probably based on engravings by Giambattista Brustolon (after drawings by Canaletto), who inspired Francesco Guardi in his series of Venetian Festivals, in the Louvre, Paris since the French Revolution. The prime versions by Guardi which the present works are after, are reproduced in A. Morassi, Guardi, Veni🍒ce 1993, vol. I, cat. nos. 245, 250, reproduced, vol. II, figs. 271, 278.
Condition
Both canvases have been relined. These paintings are in very good condition. There is only one visible spot of repair on the composition showing the Ducal palace, visible under UV at the bottom right of the palace itself. Otherwise, there are almost no repairs made to the work (only tiny retouched along the edges). Good paint retention, both works may be hung as is.
