Catalogue Note
Joan Miró was greatly influenced by his surroundings and the space afforded to him in Mallorca, where the present work was executed in 1973. The beautiful surroundings and stunning studio space that he used allowed Miró to develop and incorporate his vast imagination into his work. This later period of vibrant colours and monumental forms is clearly shown in the present work. Motifs that were signatures to his art in the late 30s are seen magnified as forms in his mature compositions, almost as signatures of his style. Miró's 1960s and 1970s œuvre shows the artist's confidence in his artistic language. The scale on which he worked in the 1970s provided an entirely new way of approaching his artistic intentions.
The colourful, bold surface of the presen🍌t work is an extraordinary testament to Miro's vivacious imagination and treatment of composition. Areas of the work have been overpainted in bold black strokes to create a truly dynamic composition.
