Catalogue Note

Antique art and architecture, not only Roman but also Etruscan, is synonymous with Italian society and provided the core of Marino Marini's inspiration. Giocoliere encapsulates Marino Marini's oeuvre and specifically the artist's role of re-examing antiquity in terms of the Modern. Although most famous for his equestrian sculpture, works such as Giocoliere form to underline the language of his art, which was to re-examine and experiment with the subject matter and monumentality of antique sculpture.

The tension in his work is not from the 'art for art's sake' readymades of his contemporaries but from the careful rebalancing of standard sculptural compositions to undermine their solidity and their purpose. 'Here in Italy, the art of the past is part and parcel of our daily life in the present. We live among the monuments of the past. I, for instance, was born in Tuscany, where the rediscovery of Etruscan art, in the past fifty years, has been something of great importance in contemporary local life...' (Marini quoted in Sam Hunter & David Finn, Marino Marini, The Sculpture, New York, 1993, p. 16)
