Catalogue Note
Takanori Oguiss's views of the backstreets of Montmartre form the greatest part of his œuvre. A follower of Maurice Utrillo, he trained in Tokyo and moved to Paris in 1927 to join his friends Tsuguharu Foujita and Gen'ichiro Inokuma. The majority of his street scenes are carefully studied and he spent a good deal of his working life in Paris on pavements with a sketchbook, taking in the ambience of Montmartre life. As a painter of street scenes he was devoted to Paris and its eccentricities, Montmartre was a haven for an artist such as Oguiss:
