Catalogue Note
In the same year he adorned the ceiling of the Paris Opera with tributary scenes of Bourgeois French culture, Marc Chagall painted this equally whimsical work depicting a vastly different side of Parisian life. Here, fifty-four y🍎ears after first leaving his native village of ꧒Vitebsk, Russia, he celebrates the peasant iconography reminiscent of his rural upbringing.
Chagall's painting invokes senses both poetic and deeply sentimental. Les Paysans, Paris, is a compilation of the artist's favorite subjects, connected by an internal, almost Surrealist principle, rather than by a rational spatial relationship. Colors are unrestrained by the line and are applied ℱwithout logical correspondance to the depicted elements. The result conjures a vibrant aura of energy and a deeply-felt sentiment towards his subjects.
