Catalogue Note

This work was inscribed by the artist to Thekla Hess, wife of Alfred Hess. The two were close friends and supporters of Feininger and his family, Erich Heckel, Paul Klee and Wassily Kandinsky among others. Their son, Hans Hess, became a well-known historian and wrote a thorough biography on Feininger.
