Catalogue Note
I do the art, not because I like to be rich, not because I like to be famous, but because I have to. It is, I don't know how you call it in English, but we call it "Panggilan Jiwa" - the calling of the soul. Whether I get a name or not, whether my painting is sold or not, really does not matter. To do the painting is the thing. I have to do it.
AFFANDI
Affandi's self-portraits signify the artist's journey of self-exploration, revealing different expressions and moods. On a certain level - whet🔯her c💮onsciously or subconsciously - his self-portrait may reflect his quest for immortality, the longing to create an image that will outlive him.
Self Portrait was executed in 1979, depicting an older, mature Affandi, smoking a pipe. Pipe smoking is considered to be one of the most relaxing and༒ pleasurable experiences. As the smoke swirls into the air, Affandi holds his pipe firmly, savouring each puff with his eyes closed. Intentionally focusing his paint applications to the head and hand, leaving the shoulders and arm as rudimentary silhouettes, Affandi directs the emphasis on his facial expression and the vapour that lingers in front of him. The paint layers are textured, with impasto that curls and twines in bold and energetic strokes. It is astounding to see so much ☂passion from a man who was seventy two when he completed the painting.
The present work is a rare glimpse of Affandi at his most tranquil and contented, embracing life, success and serenity in his mature years. Self Portrait is a celebration of an extraordinary life; the life of a man who shaped a nation's cultural identity, who overcame obstacles to become the most vibrant and acclaimed artists of Southeast Asia, whose name echoes in history; the life of a man who followed his soul.
