The painting is in good condition, as is the canvas, which is clear and taut. Examination under ultraviolet light reveals no indication of retouching. The paint layers and impasto are well-preserved. The actual painting is lighter and less red with a clearer contrast between the colours. The brown shades are particularly lighter and more brown and less reddish compared to the catalogue illustration.
