Condition

The catalogue illustration is representative but slightly too orange in tone. The painting has fairly recently been cleaned and relined. Overall the picture is in very good condition. The relining is not too rigid and much original impasto is preserved. Inspection under ultra violet light reveals some restoration, chiefly in the background just above the flowers and along the upper edge extending into the foliage upper right where there is a repaired old damage next to the fruit. A similar repair occurs just above the mushrooms in the left corner, but apart from this the restoration is limited only to very minor local retouchings or strengthenings, and the main body of the fruit is very well preserved. The restoration is well carried out and is not visible to the naked eye. The varnish layer is clear and even and the painting will require no further attention. This lot is sold with a fine Regence style carved and gilt wood frame, with some damage to the right hand edge.
