Description

- 'EUCALYPTUS TREE, FORT ROSS, CALIFORNIA'
- gelatin silver
from a Polaroid Type 55 negative, mounted on Hi-Art illustration board, signed in ink on the mount, Carmel studio stamps (BMFA 8 and 10), titled and dated in ink, and a 'Polaroid Land Photograph by Ansel Adams' stamp on the reverse, 1968, probably printed no later than 1970 (400 Photographs, p. 392)
Condition
This photograph is in generally very good to excellent condition. In the upper left quadrant near the print edge, there are two 2-inch vertical cracks/creases that appear to break the emulsion, although there are no losses. Visible in raking light in the upper right quadrant, there is a one-inch horizontal soft impression that does not break the emulsion. There is some small edge chipping along the upper left and right print edges.
The corners of the cream-colored mount are bumped, and there is light fingerprint soiling along its edges.
Karen Haas's and Rebecca Senf's book, 'Ansel Adams in the Lane Collection,' publishes the most comprehensive list to date of the studio stamps and labels Adams used throughout his career. Although the authors' assessment of the use dates of stamp 8 on the reverse of the print's mount is 1963 to 1970, this print has been dated 1968 by the photographer.
