2 photographs, including Tree Trunks, Rocks, Yosemite Valley and Redwoods, Richardson Grove, California, the first from a Polaroid Type 55 negative, each mounted, one on Crescent and one on Hi-Art illustration board, signed in ink on the mount, titled in ink and with Carmel Studio stamps (BMFA 5 and 6 and BMFA 7 and 8, respectively), and 'Polaroid Land Photograph by Ansel Adams,' or Polaroid Collection stamps, on the reverse, 1960s (The Pageant of History, pl. 20) (2)
Condition
'Tree Trunks, Rocks, Yosemite Valley' - This photograph is in generally excellent condition. In raking light under the closest examination, a few surface scratches that do not break the emulsion are barely visible. On the mount's periphery, there are transparent rust-colored droplets.
On the reverse of the mount are the following annotations in ink: Print No. '20'; Box No. 'L-1'; Negative No. '4-Y-182'; Credit 'Pol. Corp.'; and Film 'Typ 55 P/N.' Also on the reverse are adhesive remains and abrasions.
Karen Haas's and Rebecca Senf's book, 'Ansel Adams in the Lane Collection,' publishes the most comprehensive list to date of the studio stamps and labels Adams used throughout his career. The authors' assessment of the use dates of stamps 5 and 6 on the reverse of the print's mount is 1962 to 1963.
'Redwoods, Richardson Grove, California' - This photograph, on an off-white mount, is in generally excellent condition. There is age-darkening at the mount's periphery and the ½-inch area around the print is lightly sunned. There is also some light soiling in the upper left mount corner.
