- Polaroid print
unique Polaroid Type 55 print, inscribed with technical notations in ink and typed reprographic instructions in the margins, the photographer's Carmel address on a typewritten label and a partial 'exhibit print' stamp on the reverse, framed, a Polaroid Collection label and a Polaroid Collection stamp on the reverse, circa 1961 (Polaroid Land Photography, p. 203)
Condition
This impressive and highly-detailed photograph has a few minor handling creases – none breaking the emulsion – but is otherwise in excellent condition. The instructions "Height as designer indicates, width as falls" are typed in both the right and left margins. The photographer's notations, 'Bad Surge,' likely refers to an uneven dispersal of developing agent over the surface of the photograph as it was pulled from the camera; this accounts for the slight unevenness of the right edge of the image.
A circular hole was punched by Adams in the print's lower margin. As a way matching Type 55 prints with their negatives, Adams advocated punching a hole--or a series of holes--in the edge of the film/negative packet. To match a print with a negative after processing, one simply needed to match up the holes that appeared in the border of each (Polaroid Land Photography, p. 50).
