Description

- 'DETAIL, JUNIPER TREE, YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK'
- gelatin silver
from a Polaroid Type 55 negative, mounted on Flaxon illustration board, signed in ink on the mount, Carmel studio stamps (BMFA 5, 6, and 10), titled, dated, and annotated in ink, on the reverse, 1965
Condition
This photograph is in generally excellent condition. Visible upon close examination are tiny losses to the top layer of emulsion along the bottom left print edge. In raking light, tiny deposits of original retouching are visible in the upper left quadrant of the image.
The corners of the mount are bumped, and there is very faint soiling along its top edge. On the reverse, there are the following annotations: Negative No. '4-YNS__(x)'; Credit 'Polaroid Corporation'; and 'E.' Adams originally titled the print in ink 'Pine Tree, Rocks, Yosemite,' but this is crossed out.
Karen Haas's and Rebecca Senf's book, 'Ansel Adams in the Lane Collection,' publishes the most comprehensive list to date of the studio stamps and labels Adams used throughout his career. Although the authors' assessment of the use dates of stamps 5 and 6 on the reverse of the print's mount is 1962 to 1963, Adams has dated this print 'June 1965.'
