2 photographs from Polaroid Type 55 negatives, comprising 'Little Asa, Mariposa Cemetery' and Iron Grave Marker, Monterey, each mounted, the second on Crescent illustration board, each signed in ink on the mount, the first with Carmel Studio stamps (BMFA 5 and 6), titled in ink, both inscribed with technical notations in ink and with Polaroid Collection and the 'Polaroid Land Photograph by Ansel Adams' stamps on the reverse, 1962 (2)
Condition
Little Asa: This print, on paper with a surface sheen and mounted to off-white board, is in generally excellent condition. In raking light, a very soft linear mounting crease is somewhat visible near the lower left corner.
The edges of the mount are rubbed, and the corners are bumped and creased. There are faint rust-colored droplet stains at the upper edge of the mount. The reverse of the mount is soiled and scuffed, and there are small abrasions and masking tape remnants in the center. None of these affects the quality of the print.
Karen Haas's and Rebecca Senf's book, 'Ansel Adams in the Lane Collection,' publishes the most comprehensive list to date of the studio stamps and labels Adams used throughout his career. The authors' assessment of the use dates of stamps 5 and 6 on the reverse of the print's mount is 1962 to 1963.
Iron Grave marker:
The annotations by the photographer in ink on the reverse are as follows: 'Print # "L," Memo 1268A.'
This print, on paper with a surface sheen and mount to Crescent illustration board, is in generally very good to excellent condition. When examined in raking light, the following are visible: faint scratches that do not appear to break the emulsion, in the upper right quadrant; and scuffing in the upper portion of the print near the edge.
The edges of the mount are rubbed an age-darkened, and there are droplet stains of indeterminate nature at all edges except the left.
