Description

- 'FERN, SPRING, YOSEMITE VALLEY'
- Gelatin silver print
from a Polaroid Type 55 negative, mounted, signed in ink on the mount, Carmel studio stamps (BMFA 5 and 6), titled in ink, and Polaroid Collection and 'Polaroid Land Photograph by Ansel Adams' stamps with processing notations, on the reverse, 1961, probably printed in 1962-63 (400 Photographs, p. 380; Yosemite: Ansel Adams, p. 47; American Perspectives, pl. 146; Polaroid Land Photography, fig. 4-3, p. 48; Singular Images, pl. 48)
Condition
This early print, on paper with a surface sheen, is in generally fair to good condition. The edges are rubbed, and there are small losses on all edges of the print, particularly at the top edge at the left and at the lower left edge. When examined in raking light, the following are visible: 4 pinpoint indentations that have broken the emulsion in the upper right quadrant; a small deposit of original retouching that has lightened since its application; linear scratches that do not break the emulsion at the right side; a small, crescent-shaped scratch that breaks the emulsion near the lower edge; and a matte, droplet-shaped deposit of indeterminate nature at the top center edge.
The mount is somewhat age-darkened.
Karen Haas's and Rebecca Senf's book, 'Ansel Adams in the Lane Collection,' publishes the most comprehensive list to date of the studio stamps and labels Adams used throughout his career. The authors' assessment of the use dates of stamps 5 and 6 on the reverse of the print's mount is 1962 to 1963.
