Condition
'Hull, Gloucester, Massachusetts' - This print, on paper with a surface sheen, mounted on Crescent illustration board, and with an overmat that has been glued down, is in generally excellent condition.
The edges of the overmat are rubbed, and the corners are bumped and creased. There is light soiling on the overmat, as well as the reverse of the mount. There are a few small abrasions on the reverse of the mount as well.
Karen Haas's and Rebecca Senf's book, 'Ansel Adams in the Lane Collection,' publishes the most comprehensive list to date of the studio stamps and labels Adams used throughout his career. The authors' assessment of the use dates of stamps 5 and 6 on the reverse of the print's mount is 1962 to 1963. Stamp 10 indicates that this print was made from a Polaroid Type 55 negative. On this stamp, the '55' in the BMFA stamp 10 has been marked out by the photographer, and he has written '54,' indicating that the negative is a Polaroid Type 54 negative.
'House, Gloucester, Massachusetts' - This print, on paper with a surface sheen and mounted on Crescent illustration board, is in generally good to very good condition. When examined in raking light, there is a 2-inch scratch in the lower right quadrant that breaks the emulsion at one end. It is overmatted with a mat that has been glued down but is loosening at the lower right.
There is age-darkening on the mount at the periphery of the print. The overmat is soiled. Its edges are rubbed and age-darkened, and its corners are bumped and creased. There is light soiling on the reverse of the mount and darkening at the edges.
