Description

  • Ansel Adams
  • DR. EDWIN LAND
  • Gelatin silver print
from a Polaroid Type 55 negative, mounted on Crescent illustration board, a Carmel studio stamp (BMFA 5) on the reverse, circa 1962

Condition

This print, on paper with a slight surface sheen, is mounted on Crescent board. An overmat has been glued onto the mount's margins. The print is in fair to good condition. When examined in raking light, the following are visible: slightly raised mounting bubbles in the upper and lower portions of the print near the edges; and a few faint impressions and light scratches that do not break the emulsion. The overmat is soiled and is rubbed at the edges. The corners are bumped, and in some areas the upper portions of the paper ply are lifting. The reverse of the mount is soiled, and there are abrasions at the upper edge where remnants of tape were at one time affixed. Karen Haas's and Rebecca Senf's book, 'Ansel Adams in the Lane Collection,' publishes the most comprehensive list to date of the studio stamps and labels Adams used throughout his career. The authors' assessment of the use dates of stamp 5 on the reverse of the print's mount is 1962-1963.
