Condition
North Fork of Bridge Creek, Northern Cascades, Washington (20 1/8 by 16 1/2 in.) - This print, on semi-matte paper, and on a Foamcore-like flush-mount, is in generally very good condition. The edges are rubbed. In raking light, a tiny transparent line that is 1/8-inch from the edge at the periphery, is visible, and is likely the result of a prior framing.
'Rock Forms, Alabama Hills, Owens Valley, California' (13 1/2 by 10 3/8 in.) - This print, on paper with a surface sheen and mounted on smooth buff-colored card, is in generally very good condition. The lower right corner is rubbed, and there is some loss of the emulsion at the lower edge. When examined in raking light, a soft linear mounting crease that does not break the emulsion is visible in the upper right corner, as is a small area of original retouching.
The mount corners are bumped and creased.
'Rocks and Limpets, Pt. Lobos, California' (14 1/4 by 18 1/2 in.) - This print, on paper with a surface sheen and mounted on cream-colored Crescent illustration board, is in generally fair condition. The edges are rubbed, and there are several nicks at the right and lower edges. The emulsion is missing from the tip of the lower right corner. There is a 12 1/4-inch-long horizontal indentation in the upper portion of the print. It is 1/16-inch wide and is visible when viewing the print normally. There is a pencil-point-sized loss of emulsion at the left edge. In raking light, the following are visible: several scratches and indentations that do not break the emulsion; and tiny deposits of original retouching.
The mount is sunned and soiled, with several droplet stains of indeterminate nature.
Karen Haas's and Rebecca Senf's book, 'Ansel Adams in the Lane Collection,' publishes the most comprehensive list to date of the studio stamps and labels Adams used throughout his career. Our dating of this print is based upon the authors' assessment of the use dates of stamps 5 and 6 on the reverse of this print: 1962 to 1963. Stamp 10 indicates that this print is from a Polaroid Type 55 negative.
