Description

  • Henri Cartier-Bresson
  • SRINAGAR, KASHMIR
  • gelatin silver
a 'Family of Man Exhibition' stamp and annotation 'print by Petersen from the original negative' in pencil on the reverse, framed, 1948, printed in the 1950s probably by Rolf Petersen; accompanied by a letter of authentication from the Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson (Cartier-Bresson, pl. 77)

Condition

This early print, on double-weight paper with a surface sheen, is in generally excellent condition. In high raking light, a few tiny deposits of original retouching are visible in the print, as is a very soft, small crescent-shaped crease in the lower margin. The corners of the print are bumped and exhibit minor chipping. The reverse of the print is annotated in an unidentified hand in pencil '371' (circled) and '26 / 286.' This photograph was printed by Rolf Petersen from the photographer's original negative, most likely for publicity purposes for the landmark 1955 MoMA exhibition 'Family of Man.'
