Description
- Edward Weston
- ROCK FORMATION
- gelatin silver print
mounted, initialed and dated in pencil on the mount, 1942
Provenance
Frank H. Boos Gallery, 1 February 2001, Lot 799
Condition
This photograph is on paper with a semi-glossy surface and is mounted to a thick board. It is in excellent condition. When the print is examined closely in raking light, age-appropriate silvering can be seen in the shadow areas. Also visible in angled light are a very few areas of the photographer's discreet retouching. In short, there is nothing to detract from the fine appearance of this nuanced and finely detailed print.
The mount measures 11 by 9 inches, and may have been trimmed, possibly by Weston, to this size. Weston was known to have trimmed the mounts of his photographs before sending them to family or friends, so that they could more easily be mailed. Many of the Weston photographs sold in these rooms in the auction of "Edward Weston's Gifts to His Sister" (8 April 2008) were on similarly-sized mounts.
