Condition

In addition to the print of this image in the Center for Creative Photography, Tucson, Conger locates prints in the following institutional collections: George Eastman House, Rochester; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Nelson-Atkins Museum, Kansas City; Smithsonian Institution; and a project print at Santa Cruz. This photograph is on paper with a semi-glossy surface and is mounted to thick board. It is in very good condition. There is a small loss in the print's upper left corner, and a much smaller loss in the lower left corner. When the print is viewed in raking light, silvering can be seen in the dark areas. Also visible in raking light is a slightly textured appearance in the print's surface, possibly imparted by the dry-mounting tissue. It also appears as if a few particles were trapped between print and board during the mounting process. While these problems bear mentioning, they do not have a significant impact on the overall appearance of this fine print. The mount is somewhat soiled on the front, and noticeably age-darkened on the reverse. This photograph's mount may have been trimmed, possibly by Weston, to this smaller-than-standard size. Weston was known to have trimmed the mounts of his photographs before sending them to family or friends, so that they could more easily be mailed. Many of the Weston photographs sold in these rooms in the auction of "Edward Weston's Gifts to His Sister" (8 April 2008) were on similarly-sized mounts. This image is also reproduced in the following books: Life Work, plate 74 CA Landscapes, page 93 Supreme Instants, plate 86 Flame of Recognition, page 52
