Catalogue Note
This photograph, and those in Lot 144, come originally from the collection of graphic designer Robert Brownjohn (1925 - 1970). In 1944, Brownjohn became a student at Chicago's famed Institute of Design, where he was a protégé of László Moholy-Nagy. In 1946, Moholy appointed Harry Callahan as a photography instructor, and in 1949 Callahan became head of the photography department at the Institute. Brownjohn remained at the ID until 1951, when he moved to New York to pursue a career in graphic design and was hired by the legendary furniture and product designer George Nelson.
