signed and dated in ink in the margin, the photographer's copyright stamp, credit in ink, and a Robert Frank Archive stamp, annotation 'The Americans 68 Cafeteria - San Francisco' and number '854' in pencil, on the reverse, 1956, printed circa 1980 (The Americans, p. 145; Looking In, pp. 293 and 479, and Contact #68)

Condition

This photograph, on cool-toned, double-weight paper with a surface sheen, is in generally very good condition. In raking light, tiny scattered deposits of original retouching are visible overall, as well as a few small surface impressions that do not break the emulsion near the lower left edge of the image. There is a 3¼-inch crease, which breaks the emulsion, in the right margin of the print. The print edges are lightly rubbed in areas and the corners are lightly bent. On the reverse of the print, there is some graphite-colored soiling and fingerprints from handling.
In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective qualified opinion.
NOTWITHSTANDING THIS REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSIONS CONCERNING CONDITION OF A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD "AS IS" IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONDITIONS OF SALE PRINTED IN THE CATALOGUE.
