- THE YOUNG TYPESETTER
- daguerreotype
sixth-plate daguerreotype, cased, 1840s
Condition
This young typesetter appears to be standing at the same type desk as an older typesetter pictured in another sixth-plate daguerreotype offered in these rooms on 18 April 1996 as part of the Abraham Stransky Collection (Sale 6827, Lot 55).
This daguerreotype shows great detail. Only the subject's foremost hand, in which he holds a piece of movable type, is somewhat soft in focus. The rest of the image is quite crisp and clear. When the plate is examined closely, several small circular rust-colored spots can be seen, most noticeably in the subject's white shirtsleeve. There is minor tarnishing around the edges of the image, most pronounced along the bottom edge. The leather case is separated at the hinge. The piece lacks a seal, and the right edge of the preserver has become detached (although the plate/mat/glass/preserver package remains snug and intact inside the case).
