Catalogue Note
Published between 1907 and 1930, Edward S. Curtis's The North American Indian comprises a vast pictorial document of Native American cultures prior to assimilation. The selection of large-format portfolios offered here, as Lots One through 17, are duplicates from the collection of the Amon Carter Museum of American Art, Fort Worth, Texas, which recently acquired the complete set of Curtis's magnum opus. The 570 masterfully-rendered photogravures presented here are printed on either vellum or tissue and include some of Curtis's most iconic and elegiac images.  ꦿ;
Founded in 1961, The Amon Carter Museum of American Art has focused on forming a collection, in a broad array of media, that represents the finest examples of American art. Photography is integral to the Museum's mission. The Carter has staged many internationally-heralded single-photographer and group photography exhibitions. In the late 1970s, the Museum commissioned Richard Avedon's landmark In the American West project. Through d💧iligent and thoughtful stewardship, the museum has assembled one of the country's finest collections of p🔥hotographs, extending from photography's earliest years to the present.
