Condition
This ferrotyped print is in generally very good condition. There are small creases that appear to break the emulsion in the lower right corner. In high raking light, the following are visible: a 4-inch vertical linear indentation and small, faint scratches and minor creases. These do not appear to break the emulsion. Also visible in raking light is small intermittent pitting of surface, typical of ferrotyping.
The signature on the reverse is later and dated 1983. The title and date appear to be in the photographer's early hand, however. There is a notation, 'SS,' on the reverse in pencil.
In 'André Kertész: Of Paris and New York,' Sandra Phillips publishes the most comprehensive list to date of the studio stamps that Kertész used throughout his career. Her assessment of the use dates of New York Stamp #2 on the reverse of this photograph is 1938-39.
