- THE FARMHOUSE
- daguerreotype
quarter-plate daguerreotype, extensively hand-colored, sealed, cased, circa 1850
Condition
This hand-colored daguerreotype is in excellent condition, and the its colors remain bright and saturated. It is unusual to see a daguerreotype so skillfully and painstakingly hand-colored. Real care and talent has been brought to bear in both the choice and application of pigments. The coloring on the fence in particular, on which the horizontal rails have been tinted a bright red and the vertical posts left white, is notable. Similar care has been taken on the walls and trim of the barn. Green tinting has been used to enhance the profusion of trees that surround the house.
The plate delivers a lovely rendering of three dimensional space. The detail on the house is good, and a small hatted figure can be seen standing on the opposite side of the gate.
The case is separated at the hinge.
