Description
- Ansel Adams
- 'GRAND TETONS AND SNAKE RIVER, WYOMING'
- gelatin silver
mounted on Hi-Art illustration board, signed in ink on the mount, Carmel studio stamps (BMFA 7 and 8), titled in ink, and a collection stamp on the reverse, 1942, probably printed between 1963 and 1970 (400 Photographs, cover and p. 205; Our National Parks, cover and p. 31)
Condition
This striking print is in generally excellent condition. Upon extremely close examination, tiny deposits of original retouching are visible in the upper left sky area, near the left image edge, and in the lower right quadrant.
The tip of the upper right mount corner is bent; the reverse of the mount in this corner appears to be slightly bent, which does affect the front. Also on the reverse of the mount is a thin linear abrasion running down the center. The collection stamp on the reverse of the mount reads: 'Dr and Mrs Michael Adams, 1772 Alluvial, Fresno, California, 93711.' Also on the reverse of the mount, '#6004' and 'MJA # 0231' are written in an unidentified hand in pencil.
Karen Haas's and Rebecca Senf's book, 'Ansel Adams in the Lane Collection,' publishes the most comprehensive list to date of the studio stamps and labels Adams used throughout his career. Our dating of this print is based upon the authors' assessment of the use dates of stamps 7 and 8 on the reverse of this print: 1963 to 1970.
