Catalogue Note
In 1959-1960, Andy Warhol designed the stage set for the performances of the Lukas Foss / Gian Carlo Menotti operetta Introductions and Goodbyes at The Festival of Two Worlds in Spoleto, Italy.ꦚ These two sket♍ches illustrate Warhol's conception of the scenery and costume design.
The structure of the opera Introductions and Goodbyes mimics the unfolding of a cocktail party—the arrival of the guests, the conversations amongst the guests and their eventual departure. While the opera was not about a specific gathering its libretto examined the general rules of formal etiquette within an elitist social setting. The subject of the opera certainly would have appealed to Warhol's fascination with social class as well as material culture and the American public's insatiable appetite for conspicuous consumption. The artist selected ornate and sumptuous materials to dress the characters of the opera that would stand prominent against the lush interior settings depicted in the stage sets.
