Catalogue Note
For thirteen months, from July 1780 to August 1781, the French were established at Newport, Rhode Island. This base was the key to their naval position in North America and was a continuous impediment to British strategy. It had a formidable garrison of 5,000 regulars under Rochambeau, which was reinforced by American militia as occasion demanded and as evidenced by this broadside.
