Catalogue Note
"Editio Princeps of the Roman Catholic version of the New Testament in English" (Darlow-Moule-Herbert).
The translation was principally the work of Gregory Martin, who had fled England for the Roman Catholic College in Douai (temporarily based at Rheims at the time of publication of the New Te🐈stament) in 1569. Working with William Allen and Richard Bristow, Martin produced a translation that remained in use by the Catholic community for four hundred years, designed as a counter to the various Protestant English Bibles ("...hereticall translations" f. A2v). The Rheims Old Testament was published in 1609-1610.
The present copy belonged to the English branch of the Standish family, inscribed on the title "Mary Standish. Her book given me by my dear father William Standish of Standish Esquire." Foster's Lancashire Pedigrees notes as an owner of Standish Hall, a William (d. 1705) with a daughter named Mary. Miles Standish (d. 1656) captain of the Massachusetts-Bay colony, was a collateral branch of the family▨ through his great grandfather.
