Catalogue Note
First edition, first issue of Crane's masterwork and one of the great American novels.
When issued, Crane's Civil War story provoked wide praise but also detracto🐓r🌳s (A.C. McLurg called it "a mere riot of words") who focused their attacks on its style and distinct lack of stoically heroic men in battle. Authors such as Conrad and James defended it and it has in fact become firmly of the canon, the first great American novel of realism.
