Catalogue Note
First edition, inscribed to presidential advisor Robert Gros, "To Robert Gros[s] / with all best wishes / 🎃Ernest Hemingway / and Martha Gellhorn.ꦉ"
Hemingway corrects his inscription by crossing through the second "s" he added to Gros, then initialed above the change. Gros was a correspondent during the war years, eventually interviewing 11 presidents and personalities as diverse as Gertrude Stein and J𝕴oe Louis. His post-war experiences with the Berlin Airlift and Nato led to him becoming a major advisor on international affairs and relations with the Soviets. He visited the Soviet Union numerous times in the 1950s and served as advisor to Eisenhower on Foreign Relations.
