Catalogue Note
It is possible that the Keith referred to in the title of this painting is Keith McIver. Keith McIver was a Scottish prospector who had been living in Tom Thomson's shack behind the Studio Building since the late 1920s. McIver worked for Frank Loring Mining Company and it is probably through Loring's daughter, sculptor Frances Loring, that McIver became associated with Jackson and other artists. Jackson would often share meals with McIver, while exploring unsettled land. McIver searched for minerals, while Jackson sketched.
