The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com , an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. This painting has not been restored for many years. The incorporated frame is showing some recent losses and there are a few areas to the surface itself which are slightly unstable and require consolidation. The paint layer is dirty. Under ultraviolet light there is only one recent restoration visible in the upper right. Beneath the dirt layer the painting seems to be in very good condition and no serious restorations are immediately visible to the naked eye. However, it is possible that in the darkest colors, of the cloak of the Madonna for instance, there may be restorations, but there appears to be no reason why the painting cannot be carefully cleaned after the paint layer is consolidated. The condition is generally very good.
