Description

  • Bernardino Luini
  • The Madonna and Child with the Infant St John Baptist
  • oil on panel

Condition

This panel is flat and has been beveled on all four sides. A recent butterfly joint has been inset into the reverse of the panel at the top left to repair a break that extends vertically through the length of the panel at the left side. Two horizontal batons have been inset into the reverse to stabilize the panel; one about 1 inch from the top and the second about 1 inch from the bottom. From the front, the vertical break is visible along the right side of the painted image. There are also small losses to the panel along the center left edge and at the top right corner. The image presents well to the naked eye and the paint layer is stable. Under UV, an old varnish fluoresces unevenly and obscures the image. Spots of retouch are visible on top of this varnish. The eyes of the Madonna have been strengthened and there is a larger area of retouch in the Christ Child's legs and lower abdomen. Small touches have also been applied to the shrubbery in the background. In a carved, gilt and painted wood frame.

Catalogue Note

This painting repeats a composition, in smaller format and on panel, of a 🧔work by Luini in the collection of the Thyssen-Bornemisza🍷 Museum, Madrid (Inv. 232 [1977.108] oil on canvas, 86 by 60 cm.).
