- Diogenes with His Lantern, In Search of an Honest Man
oil on canvas
Condition
This canvas has an old, very thin relining. The paint surface is stable. Although the image is slightly pressed and the darker pigments have sunken, there are still lovely areas of impasto in the highlights of the lantern; the flame; and in the figure's nose and forehead. Areas of the background are a bit abraded and there are isolated, small chips and losses throughout. Two or three old vertical cracks run through the figure's face and upraised hand and arm. Under UV, there is an old thick varnish, under which one can see evidence of older restorations that address these cracks. Newer, isolated dots of retouch on top of the varnish layer address small losses and chips to the paint surface, especially along the right framing edge. Overall in good condition. In an elaborate carved and gilt frame.
