The paper is in good condition and the paint surface has been very well preserved, with excellent retention of detail in the donkey. there is a small filled gouge in the paper at upper center and a small repaired crease or tear in background above donkey's shoulders (these are both visible in the catalogue image). examination under ultraviolet light reveals retouching on repairs mentioned above; there are some other small retouches in background under donkey's stomach and a few others in foreground. figure of donkey does not appear to have any retouching. In a gilt wood frame with some small losses and nicks to the gildling.
