Description

  • gold, enamel, pearl, pendant, earclips
The pendant applied with cloisonné enamel depicting an egret grasping a frog by a reeded pond ascending into flanking stylized dragons heralded above by two birds perched on foliate branches, accented by pearls, the earclips applied with cloisonné enamel depicting fish in a reeded pond ascending into stylized dragons, accented by pearls, earclip backs latter added.

Condition

Very nicely executed enamelling detail. A small chip to the enamel on the bottom corner of the floral flourish, near the suspended pearl of the pendant, and a minor amount of surficial scratching to the lower lobe. One of the earclips shows missing blue enamel at the spike directly below the topmost pearl; the other earclip shows a small spot of enamel damage at the same area. The pearls are a creamy white hue with very good luster. In good condition overall, especially considering age.
In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Illustrations in the catalogue may not be actual size. Prospective purchasers are reminded that, unless the catalogue description specifically states that a stone is natural, we have assumed that some form of treatment may have been used and that such treatment may not be permanent. Our presale estimates reflect this assumption.

Catalogue Note

Inspired by European taste in the late 19th century for Japanese decorative arts, these designs are very similar to those produced by the collaborative work of the French jeweler Alexis Falize and the enameller Antoine Tard.  For other examples see Falize, by Katherine Purcell, Sources of Inspiration, pp. 198-213.

Please note the pearls have not been tested for natural origin.
