Catalogue Note

The present work was executed while Armitage was serving in the Royal Artillery, teaching aircraft identification (with the present owner). Armitage volunteered to join the army in 1939, having just completed his studies at the Slade School, so his artistic career was temporarily interrupted but Dancer stands as a rare, early example of his development at th🌼is time.

We are grateful to Tamsyn Woollcombe for her kind assistan𝕴ce with the cataloguing🀅 of the present work.
