Condition

Original canvas. The canvas is undulating and is loose in its stretcher. The surface is dirty with specks of staining and may benefit from a light clean. There is a small spot of craquelure and some frame paint transfer in the upper left corner. Otherwise the work is in good original condition with areas of strong impasto. Ultraviolet light reveals a few spots of old retouching about the edges. There are other small spots of fluorescence including to the wall to the centre of the composition, but these do not appear to be retouching. Held in a painted plaster frame. Please telephone the department on 020 7293 6424 if you have any questions regarding the present work.

Catalogue Note

According to the 1984 Tate catalogue the present work was 'painted in the presence of Frances Hodgkins. Morris always stressed that this particular picture had inspired Christopher Wood to visit Brittany, where Wood painted some of his most memorable works in his last two years.'
