Description
- portrait of a bearded man, half length, wearing a black hat and a black cape with a white collar
- oil on panel
Condition
The support consists of a single uncradled and flat panel. There is an old split running the height of the panel 12 cm from the left hand edge, which is held by two old battens and butterfly insets on the reverse. The painting itself is dirty and the varnish layer yellowed. There are some minor losses associated with the old split but in general the surface appears very well preserved. Inspection under ultra violet light is impeded by the thick layer of old varnish and a degree of older restoration beneath shoudl be allowed for, but the paint beneath appears in very good order indeed with only minimal signs of wear. Offered with a later carved and gilt wood frame in Renaissance style in good condition.
