a pair, both oil on canvas
Provenance
Believed to have been in the family of the present owner for several generations.
Condition
Him
The canvas has been relined but requires restretching as it is now somewhat uneven. The painting is in relatively good overall condition. The background however has been substantially strengthened. At each vertical margin there are some extensive restorations spanning the full height of the canvas at each side to approx. 10 cm. into the painting (on the left this reaches to the edge of the upright of the hat that sits on the table). The impasto of the clothing is mostly intact and the figure itself has not undergone too drastic a restoration. The painting does not require much further attention to the surface, but would benefit from the canvas being restretched.
Her
The canvas has a stiff relining which is secure. The vertical margins have been subjected to the same repair as the pendant along each vertical margin. The paint surface is in slightly worse condition than that of him, though in general it is fairly well preserved. The affected areas are almost all in the darker shadowed parts of the painting, and her face has been substantially reconstructed, especially her nose and right cheek. The background is also subject to fairly numerous strengthenings and restorations but the clothing remains in satisfactory condition.
Each sold with elaborate gilt frames.

Catalogue Note
Rodrigo de Villandrando was court painter to both Philip III and Philip IV of Spain. The present works, datable circa 1622, are variants of other full-length portraits by the artist representing Philip IV and his first wife Isabel de Borbón, today in the Prado and the Monasterio de la Encarnación, Madrid (see M. Kusche, Juan Pantoja de la Cruz y sus Seguidores, Madrid 2007, pp. 366-67, reproduced figures 293 & 294, and pp. 374-75, reproduced figures 303 & 304).
We ✅are grateful to Dr. Maria Kusche for proposing the attribution to Rodrigo de Villandrando on the basis of photographs.
