Description
- The Death of Cleopatra
- oil on canvas
Condition
The original is yellower and sharper than the catalogue illustration suggests. The canvas has a fairly old lining which is stable, the paint surface is in a very good state of preservation overall, though covered by layers of condensed dirt and varnish, and will improve markedly on cleaning. There are a few old restorations and possibly, though it's difficult to say given the thick varnish, some much older restorations, though each appear to be of a minor nature. The more obvious, more modern restorations are almost all in the upper background, for example just above the central figure's head and at the extreme right and lower right margins but there is a small area of localised retouchings beneath the platter in the very centre of the composition. Sold with a decorative gilt wood frame with several losses to the gilding.
