Description
- Saints Augustine and Jerome in a classical setting
- oil on canvas
Provenance
Acquired by the father of the present owner in the early 20th century;
Thence by descent.
Condition
The canvas has been recently lined though the lining is extremely sympathetic and has not affected the paint surface. The surface itself is in extremely good condition, largely preserved in its original state. There are however a handful of small restored damages: one to the mitre of Saint Augustine, one two-thirds of the way down his staff, and another in the extreme lower right corner. There is, too, the beginnings of a small tear in the very centre of the composition which should be stabilised. The painting is sold with a gilt cassetta frame in good condition.
