Description

- oil on canvas
Literature
F. Frangi, Francesco Cairo, Turin 1998, p. 242, under cat. no. 24 (under 'Copie').
Condition
The canvas has a relatively old lining which is stable and has not affected the paint surface itself. The paint surface is well preserved throughout though perhaps a little thin in some of the areas of shadow, such as the right hand half of Christ’s face and in the town in the right background and indeed through other parts of the background, although clearly the paint was applied very thinly in the first instance. There is very old, dirty, patchy varnish which has been partially removed but which remains in certain parts of the painting, for example in the right hand side of the angel’s face, and in the drape that flows up his back. But overall the painting would benefit from the removal of this varnish, a light surface clean and a revarnishing. It remains however largely in a good state of preservation. Sold with an old parcel gilt frame with several losses to the gilding.
