Description

  • Theodor Boeyermans
  • The emperor Constantine's vision of the cross before the battle of the milvian bridge
  • oil on canvas

Provenance

In the family of the present owners since at least the 1930s.

Condition

The canvas has a fairly recent relining which is still sound. The paint surface however remains dirty and beneath a layer of heavily discoloured varnish. The overall condition appears reasonably good but the canvas has suffered from wear in parts, notably in the sky and upper right side. There are one or two recent pinpont losses in the centre The varnish layer impedes assessment under ultra violet light but some restoration can be detected. There are no major damages, but there has been a fair degree of strengthening and washing over of the sky where the original paint was very thinly applied and is now much abraded, such as the horison in the centre, as well as some strengthening to the outlines and shadows of the figures and their costumes on the right hand side. The more thickly painted parts seem to have survived in good order. Offerd with a mdern gitl frame with bead and square key mouldings, in good order, some chips and flakes.
