Description

  • Hendrick Berckman
  • Portrait of a gentleman, three-quarter length, holding a pair of gloves in his right hand
  • signed and dated lower right: HBerckman S.(?) Fecit/ 1650 (HB in ligature)
  • oil on oak panel

Condition

The support consists of three vertical panels with a very slight convex bow. A previous cradle has been removed from the reverse and the joins now filled with wax. The joins remain clearly visible from the front. The central panel has an old vertical split which runs its entire height which has been restored and retouched. The picture has recently been cleaned and restored but the paint surface is in poor overall condition, having suffered much from abrasion in all the darks, especially the hair and costume. The whites and flesh tones are better preserved. A shiny but uneven concealing varnish cannot conceal the crudeness of much of the repair to the damaged areas and the splits. Offered with a later gilt wood frame in good condition.
