Literature

Condition

The canvas has a modern relining. The paint surface is rather abraded in the brown tones of the trees at centre, but is in overall good condition. No major damages to the work are apparent, but an L shaped restored stretcher mark is apparent approximately 3 cm, in from the upper and right hand margins due to the unevenness of the painting's surface and the slight discolouration of the retouchings. Inspection under UV light confirms the aforementioned retouchings to the stretcher marks and further reveals fairly extensive retouchings to the sky. A handful of scattered spot retouchings to the foreground fluoresce, with a small but more concentrated area of retouchings lower left approx 1cm2. Offered in a gilt wood frame in good condition.

Catalogue Note

The sharply receding trees recall the Promenade in St James' Park at Castle Howard, datable to 1710.1 Although unknown to Scarpa Sonino when she published her monograph on the artist, Pedrocco (see Literature) dated the work to circa 1715. There is a very similar fountain in Ricci's Park of a villa in the Accademia in Venice.2
